The School was founded in 1987 with the donation from Dr. Tin Ka Ping, with Yan Oi Tong Limited as the School's sponsoring body.  There are approximately 1,100 students, organized into 5 classes for each of the forms from S1 to S5.  In addition there are 4 matriculation classes, bringing the School's total number of classes to 29.  Under the leadership of the Principal, there are 60 teachers at the School, all of whom are university graduates or above with professional teaching qualifications. The ratio of teachers with postgraduate qualifications is also one of the highest among the secondary schools in Hong Kong. Currently, the teacher-pupil ratio is 1 : 19.3.

Our School Improvement Programme (SIP) was completed in mid-2005.  The School’s teaching block houses 25 standard classrooms, over 10 micro-teaching rooms, a science laboratory and several specialized learning centres (including a Language and Culture Multi-Media Learning Centre, an English Language Multi-Media Laboratory, a Mathematics Learning Centre, and a Liberal Studies Resource Centre, etc.).  Other communal facilities comprise a school hall, a weight-training gymnasium, a Student Activity Centre, a school library, computer rooms, a medical room, a student counseling room, Parents’ Resources Centre and sports playgrounds.  All classrooms, teaching rooms, the school hall, library, weight-training gymnasium and the covered playground are equipped with air conditioning facilities.

 The School’s Jazz Dance Group, which has won several Honours Awards and Choreography Awards in the Schools Dance Festival, performing in the Cultural Performances Week in Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Founding of the School.

2001-2003- The Only Recipient of the Outstanding School Award (OSA) in the Support for Students and School Ethos Domain

 Comments on the OSA Certificate: 

Yan Oi Tong Tin Ka Ping Secondary School has been conferred the Outstanding School Award for its outstanding performance in the domain of Support for Students and School Ethos. The OSA Adjudication Panel was particularly impressed with the School’s student-focused and School-based counseling policies, which create a learning environment conducive to the broad-based development of students.  The ideal and mission of the School stem from a basic belief that every student can learn effectively through active participation, experience and multi-disciplinary exposure.  This belief permeates through the School’s objectives, policies, plans and major decisions.  The entire teaching staff share the same dream, to which they readily devote their full selves.  The teaching staff also exhibit a high level of team spirit and morale, and clearly understand their role as providers of school-based teaching, care and support for all students.  This mentality is especially important to those students who require particular encouragement and attention along their learning paths.

School Management
The education philosophy and aspirations are clear; school plans are realistically formulated and driven by curricular reforms.  Ideas and opinions from teaching staff, parents and alumni are adequately considered.  The School is active in driving school-based curricula and learning activities; encourages the professional development of teaching staff; maintains close community relations; and strives to garner external resources for school development.

Learning and Teaching

Students’ horizons and exposure to multi-disciplinary learning are broadened, whereby the higher-order thinking skills of students are further enhanced. 
Curricula designed, including Liberal Studies, are highly school-based.  Strategies have also been formulated for developing project learning, reading and the English Bridging Programme.

Teaching staff have clear lesson goals, good subject knowledge; deliveries clear; serious about education and yet approachable.
Most of the students show good motivation and participation in learning, trust the School, and are well disciplined.

Support for Students and School Ethos
The School facilitates the multi-disciplinary development of students and cultivates the leadership in them.  All programmes including leadership training, community services, and ‘One Sport One Art for One Student’ have remarkable participation rates and results.

Parents approve of the School’s direction of development; communication between the School and parents is adequate; teachers and parents also maintain close contacts.
The School aspires to develop into a learning organization; teaching staff are mindful of professional development; student leaders are also inspired by the School Motto.

Students demonstrate accommodating attitudes; a caring and supportive atmosphere begins to take shape.

Student Performance
Students enjoy participating in multi-disciplinary activities, demonstrating good social and communication skills.  Classroom discipline is good.
The percentage of the School’s HKALE candidates having attained the minimum entry requirements for degree courses has consistently exceeded the Hong Kong average for over three years.
The Students have won trophies and awards in
inter-school sports competitions, dance, drama, music and speech festivals.  Their performance is all the more remarkable in swimming, modern dance and drama.
